1. Fish & Chips

British Dish fish and chips

For any foodie embarking on a journey to London and the UK, Fish & Chips is an absolute must-try. It embodies the quintessential British dining experience, and its simplicity belies its immense flavor.

Picture it: a perfectly battered, snow-white fish fillet, glistening with a tempting golden hue. With each bite, the delicate crunch gives way to succulent, flaky flesh that simply melts in your mouth. The chips, generously cut and fried to perfection, offer a satisfyingly hearty texture that complements the fish exquisitely.

In the past, this beloved dish would arrive wrapped in newspaper, an iconic sight that added a touch of rustic charm. While that tradition has faded, the essence of Fish & Chips remains intact, proudly preserving its heritage and legacy.

The exact origins of Fish & Chips may be shrouded in debate, but what cannot be disputed is the enduring appeal and ubiquity of this culinary gem. Whether credited to the entrepreneurial spirit of John Lees in Lancashire or the enterprising Joseph Malin in East London, the result is the same—an iconic dish that has become a cornerstone of British cuisine.

Pie and Mash is a classic culinary dish with a history as intriguing as its flavors. Its origins can be traced back to the bustling streets of early 19th-century London, where enterprising individuals would catch eels from the majestic River Thames. These slippery creatures, transformed by skilled hands, became a unique pie filling, offering a delicious twist on traditional fare. Paired with creamy mashed potatoes, Pie and Mash quickly became a beloved fixture in London’s culinary landscape.

The enigmatic “liquor sauce” added to the dish’s charm. This sauce was crafted from the very essence of the eels’ cooking water, creating a unique and flavorful complement. Back then, Pie & Mash shops weren’t just about pies; they offered a variety of eel-related delights, including stewed eels, jellied eels, and live eels for adventurous home cooks, making these establishments culinary havens for those seeking extraordinary tastes.

As times have changed, so too has Pie and Mash. Eels have made way for minced beef, a delightful substitute that retains the dish’s heartiness and satisfaction. The traditional eel liquor sauce has evolved into a delicate fish stock infused with fresh parsley and vinegar, creating a symphony of flavors that beautifully accompany each delectable bite.

Travel Hack: Use Hop On Hop Off buses to Move Around London Quickly

Hop on Hop Off buses are particularly useful if you want to explore a location in greater depth, stop for a bite to eat, or just stretch your legs. Tickets come in 1-, 2- or 3-day options, which enable you to spread your city tour out over the course of a few days.
